Three-dimensional field structure in open unstable cavities Part II: Active cavity results.

The three-dimensional field distribution of the diffractive cavity mode structure in an active, open, unstable laser resonator is presented as a function of the equivalent Fresnel number of the cavity. The active cavity mode structures are compared to that of the corresponding passive cavity so that the effects of a spatially extended, homogeneously broadened, saturable gain medium on the cavity field structure may be ascertained. The qualitative structure of this intracavity field distribution, including the central intensity core (or oscillator filament), is explained in terms of the Fresnel zone structure defined over the cavity feedback aperture.

Nano cavities based on silicon and indium phosphide materials have been comparedin this study, considering field intensity enhancement factor. The results of FDTD based simulations declare that the Si nano-cavity improves confined optical field about 7.7 times higher than the InP based nano-cavity. The introduced dielectric nano-cavities support resonance wavelength at about λ=1.55 μm.

We present a composite optical cavity made of standard laser mirrors; the cavity consists of a suitable combination of stable and unstable cavities. In spite of its very open nature the composite cavity shows ray chaos, which may be either soft or hard, depending on the cavity configuration. This opens a convenient route for experimental studies of the quantum aspects of a chaotic wave field.
